5 Ice Cream Shops You Must Visit in Chicago

Goat Cheese and Red Cherries Ice Cream Cone
A scoop of my homemade Jeni’s goat cheese and red cherries!

It’s summer, National Ice Cream Day is approaching, and because it’s delish, duh! Do you really need a reason to want a scoop of ice cream?

If you’re looking for a place to grab a scoop of deliciousness, keep reading! Of course there’s no way I can highlight all of the spots, but these are a few favs.

Where to go

The Original Rainbow Cone 9233 S Western Ave., Chicago, IL

This spot is such a Chicago classic! I remember always having to end my day at the Taste of Chicago with a rainbow cone. Catch their ice cream truck around town, or visit the shop.

Shawn Michelle’s Ice Cream 46 E. 47th St., Chicago, IL

I love that I can walk here and get scoops because it’s right in my neighborhood! Bonus, Shawn Michelle’s is Black-owned!

Kilwins 310 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL or 5226 S. Harper Ave., Chicago, IL

This spot has creamy frozen treats and other delicious sweets. Bonus, the Hyde Park and South Loop locations are Black-owned!

Ben & Jerry’s The Navy Pier location is currently closed, but hit those grocery store shelves!

We currently have at least 3 containers of B&J’s in our freezer right now. Ben & Jerry’s may serve melty ice cream, but they stand firm on their beliefs. Gotta love that!

Okay, this one has a story. I became obsessed with Jeni’s after having a scoop of the goat cheese with red cherries in Atlanta. I came home on a hunt for the recipe. Jeni’s made it easy for me because they’ve printed it, and I found it online. My homemade version was just as good! I now use the Jeni’s recipe as my base ice cream recipe because it’s so rich. I’m telling you, get the book!

I think I just may have talked myself into making a batch of frozen goodness this weekend! We purchased this amazing ice cream machine a few years ago, and I don’t use it nearly enough. Now that we’ve gotten past our refrigerator and warranty woes, this may be the move. I’ll keep you all posted!

Drop a comment and let me know your favorite ice cream flavor of all time. If we’re talking primary flavors, I’m team strawberry!
